I've got a 99 s10 gas tank i'm going to section. Is there anything i need to know before cutting and welding? I know to fill it with water a couple times before, but how do i keep it from rusting on the inside? Is there some kind of coating i have to put on it? On body metal you have to paint the back black so it does'nt rust, but i'd think you would'nt be able to paint the inside of the gas tank. ANy ideas?

ok first off gas its self wont make it rust but any moisture will go to ur local paint shop and get ask for the stuff people put inside motercycle gas tanks thats what i used when i sectioned my s-10

Get a Por 15 gas tank kit.

OK sounds like your gonna do this even tho there is alternatives. so here is how to get it done. First rinse with water like you planned. Next put a torch inside the tank to make sure there is no more gas. If there is gas at this point it will just burn itself out. Now section your tank. Now fill thee tank to check for leaks, if there is leaks fix them. Next take it to your local radiator shop most of them can clean the inside, and coat it for you. Hope thoseare the answers you were looking for.

thanks for the responses, guys. Matt, i'm getting a raised gastank crossmember (i sectioned it when i bagged it but it still hangs down too low, and the gas tank sits on the trackbar when layed out, and i'm gonna take out 3" for when i stock floor it). Seth, what's a por 15 gas tank kit and where do i get them? Kevin, the alternatives i've come up with so far are fuel cells (i don't want anything inside the bed), relocating the gas tank (i can't because all my air ride stuff is under the rear of the bed), and a drag proof tank from Devious (they have'nt answered any email from me so far). But thanks for the advice. you too, josey. Preciate it.

ok the torch in the gas tank does'nt sound safe at all. one nobody like to have stuff blowup in there face and two s-10's have a plastic fuel pump in the tank that for the most part hold gas in it no matter how well u flush it and would not be good to set on fire. when i did mine i ran a hose from a tail pipe to the tane and this makes it impossible for anything to catch fire

when i went through the whole gas tank situation, i just raised it and sectioned the x member.. my question is if u take 3" out of the whole height of the gas tank, what fuel pump are u gonna use?? cuz i dont think the stock pump will fit back in..

Putting a torch in your tank is the only way to make it 100% safe before welding. If there is gas fumes in your tank when you put the torch in it the gas will flame out of the opening. and not blow up in your face. If you read I also said to flush before doing this with water. If you do not flame the tank you will run into problems as soon as you try to weld. As for the fuel pump in your tank this will have already been removed im sure. And I have no Idea on why you would put a hose from your tail pipe in your tank while you weld it.
