Alrighty guy's and girls have some questions. I'm building a slammed Ranger with a 68 390FE Big Block or maby a fuel Injected 351C. I'm wanting to set it up to meet the Cali EPA laws, incase I might happen to move there. When doing an engine swap do they go with the year of the engine or the year of the truck??? Also how would I make a carb engine meet the EPA specs and a fuel injected engine meet the EPA specs??? Please everyone help me out. ThanksBarrett

In California your injection technology must me equal to or newer than what came in the vehicle originally. So if your Ranger has EFI, you simply cannot have a carb. And as far as I know the motor cannot be more then 4 or 6 years older than the vehicle it is being swapped into, but that I'm not sure of.

Also, in doing EFI, you need all of the smog equipment that came on that vehicle. So, say you got a 302 out of a 91 Mustang, you need every smog component that came on that vehicle in 1991. Now you must take it to a smog refferee. They basically look over everything carefully and judge wethere or not its road worthy, done correctly, and if all of the smog is there, and how well the motor runs. Then it is to there judgement wether they pass you or not. If you do get passed, they will give you a slip that you take to the smog station that says they smog it as a 1991 Mustang.

well what about all the guy's that do 350 swaps to their S-10's in Cali they have a carb. not all, but how do they get away with it???

Seth is pretty much right on. CA is real anal on smog issues unfortunately. i had a '99 Ranger, but the guy that did the bodydrop removed all the emissions equipment which deemed it unsmoggable. so, it's something to consider when working on a newer truck. good luck.

Yea, basically do it right, find a diesel VIN and swap it on your truck, or bribe the smog guys. But that doesnt always go well. I had a friend loose his license over that.

I wouldnt worry too much about smog and motors..if you want it that bad theres ways around it..it'd be more of a headache to make your vehicle legit in california than it would be to pay an extra hundred bux and get it smogged,just my 2 cents i had to pay 80 bux to get my dodge smogged and 100 to get my old chevy smogged

how would having a diesel VIN number work? wouldn't it be odd to pull into the smog place with an S10 but it says it's a diesel? i'm new to this method, haha. after i got my hacked to shit Ranger back it was due for a smog check to renew the registration, i had to get an illegal check. it cost me $250, then sold it after that.
