On a 98', he would probably have to run 17's to keep the stock fenderwells. As bagged85 said, he will need a new tranny crossmember, and make sure to notch a spot on each side for your tie rod ends, and reinforce around where you notch out.

if he ran 17's he would more than likely have to run a 205/40

i wouldnt run 205/40s on anything other than a standard cab 4 banger. they WILL bubble out on the sides. use a 215/40.

good thing i guess then that I have a standard cab 4 banger. I had to put some on the rear in order to get the extra 2" of clearance I'm going to need this winter.

You can lay on anything, but you will really only be laying engine crossmember without z'ing which your friend will never do if he wont cut the fenders. I lay but I am on 15's so I am no help.

laying engine crossmember is what most everyone lays that's not bd'd though so he really wouldn't look any different than typical rangers.

ok i am on my second 98 model ranger the first one i had was bagged on 17s and i still had my fenderwells didnt have to cut anything and i could drag with no problem rubbing the second one that i am currently workin on i started with 18s and had to cut the fenderwells out and get rid of some stuff under the hood to lay just bein bagged but i am currently body dropped and you will just have to wait and see what size wheels will be on it when i am done... heres a pic on 17s   you can see it does lay all the way out
