The previous generation was 79-83, so I guess look for one of those if you need it really narrow. The 84-95 is already a couple inches narrower than the Mazda, if I'm not mistaken...

ive heard stories that the 86-95 is 57.5" wide, but from my understanding the tacos are 60" wide, 86-95 is 58.5", and the earlier (79-85) are 55". i had an 83-84 in my mazda, and it was alittle over 3" narrower.

you may be right, I'm going to a toyota salvage soon (maybe even today! if I get my lazy butt up) so I might bring a tape measure and find a few trucks.

The only reason I would wonder is that the body years run 84-88 and 89-95, and the 84-95 frame is almost exactly the same throughout the run. The 79-83 trucks were also a different body and were quite a bit narrower in physical size..

haha reminds me. I had a 79 long bed I called the "uncle buck truck" (seen the movie?), it had 398k on the original motor and was so rapped out that after shutting the key off and dieseling for exactly 28 seconds, it would let off like a 1812 cannon. I got good at timing it and pointing my finger, scaring the shit out of everyone close by. Hahaha I remember the throttle return spring broke on the highway and I fixed it with a bungee cord! The gas pedal felt like a clutch.. hahaha good memories.
