I didnt know where to put this thread, hey ssm guys how about a "how-to" forum. Anyway, how do you go about smoking (darkening) tailights or headlights? Is it like a transparent black or do you thin the paint way out or is it just like a tinting method or what? I'd like to try it out on my ranger.

you can get it at walmart in the model car section. it is transparent black. they use it for tinting model car windows and in the 70's people used it to tint real car windows.

DO not tint the clear topcoat.....if it gets scratched you are screwed....and do not use black base toner to tint the clear use kandy black toner....or whatever colour kandy toner you want ( like blue or red...)

Heres the breakdown with PPG paints.

Use DBC 500 intercoat mixing clear, tint it black with a very small amount of toner, the kandy toners are very strong and if you add too much it will bleed....then mix it and look at the colour on the mixing stick when you pull it out, if it is slightly light add more, if it is dark add more clear.

Sand the lenses down with 1000 grit paper, spray the kandy toner base( obviously cleaning and tacking before you do it)
let it flash then put on a couple good layers of regular catalyzed clear like DCU 2002...

why not just use some night shades...its a "paint" in a spray can that is made just for tinting tail lights. its what i used on my dak, works great.here are some pics (the red you see in the second pic is from the flash)...

Also here is a really good write up on how to do it....http://www.corrado-club.ca/mods/tailtints.html
