Every tire has a load index. Your right though, a D rated tire is something like 2700 pounds per tire. E is something like 3000+... But what ever the rating on the tire is, is what you can put on it.
They started building 22" tires with some kind high load index once truck and SUVs started running them all the time. Some guys still run car tires, but there are alot of light duty type tires in the sizes you guys want to run on a 22" rim.

Billy T hit most of the points I was going to make. However the Nittos on my truck have a 1733 lbs load rating each and the trailer was taking most of the weight from the cars on it. I dont worry about blowouts because you are so low to the ground and if one tire blowsout you have 3 more in the rear and a spare.

I haul with 19"s 20"s and 22"s. Never had a tire problem.
