Just picked me up an 84 Xcab that comes with Power Steering.

My Issue is that the pump doesn't seem to work. It doesn't have a leak or anything, but it also doesn't move fluid around to make steering any easier.

Whats the problem? Is the pump burnt up?Can I pull the whole setup out and run it like rack-and-pinion or should I just replace the pump ($150 brand new)?

You can run rack and pinion. Or you could switch to a manual steering box if you can't find the problem. I have an extra manual box in my garage.

it all depends on if you want power steering or not. If you want it replace the pump, if you dont take it all off and get a manual box and your set.

Seth, you do anything with that stuff i sold you?

I put the steering box on my frame once. Other than that I have no use for it yet. Lol. My truck is still a bare ass frame. But when I start putting it back together I will be able to put it to use.

Thats cool!

Whats the difference from a manual and power steering box? Would the rack-and-pinion be a complete bitch to drive (like older car/boat without PS) or would it be like driving a compact car (or something close to it)?

I dont want to spend that much to replace the pump if I can pull it off, and just run it without. I also dont want to pop and veins in my body from trying to turn.

Its not that hard to turn these trucks without power steering, since they're so light. Parking lot driving sucks, because of the low speed, but once moving its not a big deal.

So it is just as basic as pulling the pump and calling it a day?
