So I'm going to be pulling my engine for the first time without any experience. How much time should I give myself for this chore? Its a 4.8 ltr in my 01 gmc. Also, any pointers would be helpful. I will be going by a haynes book.

Oh, and also, i have no idea of how much the engine weighs but I have a 1000lbs. engine stand. I'm guessing that will be plenty

youll also need a picker to get it up and out. just make sure you lable all the wires that you take off. the haynes will help out alot also

Depends on on if you are labeling all of the wires and stuff like that to help you remember where they go. If you are pulling the enging with the trans. Worse case a day. I have done them in 4 hours by muself without air tools.

I just did mine in my old c10. Not as many wires and what not but it was still a bitch. I had handtools no air tools. A picker and an engine stand. I pulled the motor and trans together. I just cut the wires cause i wasn't gonna use the truck after i pulled the motor. Got the powertrain out and on the ground unbolted the trans was able to pick it up by hand and put it in the corner of the garage. Put the motor on the stand. Took me and 1 friend about an hour and a half to pull. And a 12pack of beer it was over with. But give yourself the better part of a day. Mark everything u unplug on both the motor and the engine bay. Masking tape works well for marking wires and hoses. Its not as hard as it sounds. More or less just time consuming. Good luck.

Fully dressed, your engine and tranny weigh about 460lbs. your engine itself is probably 350 with all accessories on it. The stand will be plenty.

cool, thanks. I went out and bought an 26 gal air tank from home depot a couple weeks ago so I will have use to air tools. I will try and pull the engine minus the trans. We will see how that goes. But yeah, I plan on labeling EVERYTHING My luck I will still fuck it up though.

Just wondering but why are you taking it out?
And if you are repainting the fenders make sure you clean ALL ground surfaces or you'll drive yourself nuts tryin to figure out why your truck wont start or is doing weird things.
I also dont know how your tranny crossmember looks but i know with some of the stock ones it's not a bad idea to place a jack stand under the bell-housing portion of the trans.
and from personal expereience if your picker has a chain levelewr on it throw it away(thats my opinion)

in my 72, granted we cut a good bit of hoses and didnt need to label much of anything, we got it out in like an hour haha. the hardest part was clearing the starter as I didn't take it off before hand.

I would give yourself 2 days if you are playing it safe.

i pulled the engine and trans out in my toyota a while back it was pretty easy... be sure to take pictures of EVERYTHING especially the complicated areas where you have vacume lines and such going. i labeled everything as well. my electrical connections were lettered and my vacume connections were numbered. it was pretty easy. although it was my first time doing it as well, it took me a few nights (only wrenching a couple hours a night alone) to get everything disconnected and labled checked and rechecked. it helps when you have two people there to pull it out and put it back in aswell. with my toyota ifound it easier to pull the motor with the tranny. but either way, im sure you'll be fine. after you get the motor out you'll think to yourself, wow...that wasnt as bad as i thought. lol good luck with everything.

oh it also helps if you pull off stuff like the alternator, starter, and exhaust just to get it out of the way. i even pulled my radiator and stuff out so i didnt have to worry about anything getting caught up.
