you take your block to the shop, they clean it up, machine it, install all new parts, button it up, and you pick it up. I disassembled my own so that saved 200 bucks give or take. I would atleast pull your head off, and turn the motor over manually so you can inspect cylinder walls and piston tops. Valves and all can be seen at that point as well. The surface anyways. Possibly can check cam/bearings at this point with the head off, I think mazdas are OHC setups? Wouldn't swear by it. Either way, if you are certain its crap, open her up and see what is burnt/broken/cracked and go from there. Could quite possibly be bad rings and blown head gaskets.

the JDM engines I am talking about are from japanese market cars/trucks. Japan has really high registration and inspection schedules on older cars, so people junk their cars and buy new ones because it is frequently cheaper than registering the old one. The motors are in great physical and mechanical shape, and they come with a warranty against DOA. Mine came from a dealer in TX, it was 550 (no core) and is still in great shape.

Russ.... help me find one.

the company that supplied mine isnt in business any longer, but there are buttloads of JDM importer shops in canada because of the different importing laws. You should be able to find one close to you. Then just ask them to bring over a b2000 van motor, and make it clear its not expensive or hard to find or high performance, and they will give you a good deal.

I got my Bongo motor from a place out in Washington state. Orangemazdab2000 got his from the same place- a gentleman named Christopher has the hook up out there. He had quite a few FE engines- bongo motors, JDM b2000 truck engines- like Russ's, and genuine FE3's

The engien shops around here wanted an assload of money to do a rebuild. I think the lowest quote I got was $2,400, and the most ridiculous was $4,000. So I opted to do it myself, and just have the motor checked. My bore was still straight, so I didn't need to bore it. Just got a rebuild kit with stock sized pistons and rings. I took my head to a "head shop" where thats nearly all they do. I walked in and saw 4 Toyota heads on the bench wrapped in plastic, and a bare one being used as a paper weight. I knew I was in the right place. It cost me $250 to have the head rebuilt, with new oversized stainless valves, all new seals, guides and valve seats.

As for the transmission, is it manual? If so, rebuild it. They're simple, hard to screw up really. Just get a manual for it that has a good breakdown and torque specs. You can do it yourself in 2 weekends tops. Get a rebuild kit for it from a transmission shop, and have the bearings or bushings that are pressed on the main shaft pressed off and replaced. There might be some in the case as well, as its probably a center support transmission. Its unlikely there will be more than 3 pressed bearings, so it shouldn't cost much. I haven't torn down any Mazda transmissions, but I've done a good few Toyotas and Nissans.

It has been a couple of years but there was a place in Ontario Oregon called JIM japenesse import motors. you might check them it might be cheaper for you to go get it than to pay shipping on some of the other ones. they used to ofter rebuilt and import motors. good luck. and if you really wanted to you could just drop a 302 into it.
