The engien shops around here wanted an assload of money to do a rebuild. I think the lowest quote I got was $2,400, and the most ridiculous was $4,000. So I opted to do it myself, and just have the motor checked. My bore was still straight, so I didn't need to bore it. Just got a rebuild kit with stock sized pistons and rings. I took my head to a "head shop" where thats nearly all they do. I walked in and saw 4 Toyota heads on the bench wrapped in plastic, and a bare one being used as a paper weight. I knew I was in the right place. It cost me $250 to have the head rebuilt, with new oversized stainless valves, all new seals, guides and valve seats.
As for the transmission, is it manual? If so, rebuild it. They're simple, hard to screw up really. Just get a manual for it that has a good breakdown and torque specs. You can do it yourself in 2 weekends tops. Get a rebuild kit for it from a transmission shop, and have the bearings or bushings that are pressed on the main shaft pressed off and replaced. There might be some in the case as well, as its probably a center support transmission. Its unlikely there will be more than 3 pressed bearings, so it shouldn't cost much. I haven't torn down any Mazda transmissions, but I've done a good few Toyotas and Nissans.
