VHT paint is good for engine blocks. Its heat resistant, and once properly cured its oil, gas and coolant proof. Won't affect the finish. Its about $8 a can, but 2-3 cans would do a block.

If you do base/clear the block will be fine. The heads are the only thing I would worry about. They may get too hot around the exhaust ports.

hmm lots of people talking without knowledge i guess.. had base clear on my chevelle engine since 99 and still looks like new.. and no its not yellowed either

Yeah I have to agree. I did base clear on a 427 back in 99 with a silver base and it is still holdiing up great.

Like others have said above. PREPERATION. This is the most important step just make sure you get the block good and clean. De grease, scotch bright pad, self etching primer, base and then clear it will last a long time and always look just as good. Don't use cheap shit cause you'll get a cheap looking result down the road
