TRY THE MASS AIR FLOW METER/SENSOR, OR THE IDLE SENSOR OR CONTROL VALVE.

Mine was combination of shit, EGR was bad, gas cap didnt hold pressure, fuel filter was clogged, fuel injectors, etc.

my 87 v6 did that exact thing and i put a wrecking yard air flow meter and it made the problem worse. so swapped a second afm in and it fixed the problem. So did you buy a new afm at the dealer for $500 + or did you get a used one?

not sure if the IAC (idle air control) valve and the MAF are a single unit on this vehicle but it actually sounds like an IAC problem and not a MAF problem. However, I have seen some strange things in the past that would lead you to believe one thing and it end up being something completely different. Just a suggestion though. Hope this helps some.

the maf is a reman unit i got online from a place ive purchased from before.i tinkered with it some more yesterday and it seems to be idling somewhat better but the tube that goes down the side of the exhaust and connects in the cat is getting very hot and smoking.so i pulled the cat to see if it was cloged but it seems fine, although it is the original one so it should be replaced.also when i went to drive it, it was completly gutless floored it wouldnt make it up my drive way,it wasnt winding out passed 2000 rpm.any ideas on this?thanks for any help

not familiar w/this vehicle, but is this tube you speak of part of an A.I.R. system?? Do you have an A.I.R. pump on this vehicle?? If this is a tube for this system and it is getting hot in conjunction w/a lack of power, that would lead me to believe that the Catalytic converter is in fact the culpret of this concern. You say you removed it and it seemed fine?? How so?? Do you mean that the honeycomb has not come apart?? The cat can still be clogged and the honeycomb still be in tact. How hot is the exhaust getting prior to the cat?? Is your piping changing color?? Maybe turning red while running and looking white/powdery/ashy buildup when cooled off?? Won't really be powdery, but can look it. If so, then the exhaust definately has a restriction some where whether it be in the cat or in a resonator or in the muffler. Best bet would be to remove the exhaust starting at the rear one section at a time and try driving it up the road. See if you can isolate the restricted part by process of elimination. It's really hard to diagnose something w/o physically looking at it or even duplicating the concern in person, but I hope this helps some.
