sup guys..... i have a cowl hood for my truck which i took down to bare metal because it had like 6 layers of paint...well me questions is is better to do the body work now on bare metal?or primer it first.. please explain the steps also i use a filler primer called 5 start the yellow one.. is it any good? is 70 bucks the gallon

the best way in a corrosion protection sense would be to lay down an epoxy primer first then do your mudwork then shoot urethane primer on top of that. Just do not lay down your regular primer first unless it is ment to stick to bare metal. The old school way to do it would be to start out with an etching primer then go to your urethane primer next. hope this helps and does not confuse you.

ASE and I-CAR say you should always apply an etching primer to bare metal followed by a filling primer or sealer...I always use etching primer then high build primer..they also say body filler should only be applied over bare metal..no primer should be under the filler

not true you can put body filler right over PPG's DPLF.

epoxy has a greater corrosion resistance than etching primer, and you can put filler over it just fine.

ok so what i use an epoxy first then the filler?

not sayin ya can't do it..but ask the manufacturer and the companies that cerify the profesionals...they say body filler should be applied over bare metal only...and you should always apply etching primer or an etching material before applying primer, even if it is epoxy primer, I have done it other ways before with no mishaps, but I've been lucky

ASE and I-Car are just general stuff they are not company specific. Each paint company is diferent. And what ASE and I-Car does not over rule the paint companys, that are doing millions of dollars of reseach each year. And yes I am ASE master certified and PPG Gold certified and I would listen to my paint reps that only deal with one brand of product instead of ASE or I-Car that just to general stuff for every one.

ok then...so what your sayin is it is always ok to do as I say..and it is sometimes ok to do as you say when your using a particular product, but you can still do it my way....so who's advice would be better for the guy whoi asked this question who is apparently new to body work?
