whats the best bag setup to handle high horsepower? 300+... im thinking an all forward triangulated 4 link with bags over the axle (with the right math for notch height etc).

You are asking a very general question. Do you want to be able to launch hard or just not have it break from day to day abuse?

Maxx, can I ask you if it is possible to have a comfortable driving reliable rear set up that hooks and launches hard. what would be the best for that?

Ahh, the question above all questions for me...

There is no way to have a suspension that excels at everything. Even only two things. You will have to make a decision as to what you want it to do first, then you can fudge it to do a little (or more) of the other. Think of it like a video game, you only get so many points to build a character, the more money you have the better it can do more, but there will always be a limit.

So... What exactly do you want it to do? Handle good and launch okay or launch good and handle okay. The harder it launches the worse it will handle, the better it handles the less it rides nice.

Max, ultimately I'd like it to be able to reliably handle the power - with an occaisional launch.

Having the bags on the bars seems to offer the best ride - but for some reason im skeptical as to how it would handle the power , as if the bag might compress and decompress from the torque/power more so than above the axle.

So for curiosity sake, what's the best for launches, and the best for handling in this scenario?

lol i knew it was you! you should probabally tell him the whole scenerio and what your plans are? Max how come you dont engineer cars for a major company or something? just curious?

gotboost79- There is no reason that you couldn't run the bags on the bars in a high horsepower application. The bags have no idea how much power you have, they only "see" the weight of the vehicle. The problem is that in order to launch well the vehicle needs to "push" the rearend against the ground. A vehicle that rides good has a softer suspension that just absorbs the "push" and doesn't put the power down as well. That is where your bag placement needs to be compromised. For a tuneable system, you might want to build a few different mounting positions in order to find the best compromise in bag placement. As for 4-link design, you would run shorter bars, because they transfer more dynamic energy helping with traction also running your instant center a little shorter and a bit higher will also help with the initial "hit" when launching. Then there are shocks, again it would probably be a benefit to spend the extra $ on adjustable shocks so that you can find the best compromise.

There is no doubt in my mind that you could build a system to do what you want it to for only a small amount more $ than a "basic" 4-link. It just depends on how well you want it to do everything.


built to drag- Besides the fact that I don't play well with others, true suspension designers make me look like an absolute amateur. There is so much going on, dynamicaly, in even the simplest suspension, it's unreal.

i guess there are alot of forces and factors involved that the average person cant even imagine. i often wonder what would happen to some of these trucks in a crash test or an actual accident. i see alot of guys making frames out of some pretty thick wall box with tons of reinforcement. i just think frames were meant to flex and give in certain spots to keep you alive.
