They are both good cameras. I currently have a nikon d80 and I love it. Why don't you type in nikon d40 reviews in yahoo or google and see what you get.

I used a Minolta Maxxum back in the day of 35mm. When I changed to digital I chose a Canon Digital Rebel XT. It was okay but I liked the pics I got from my Minolta better. Recently Sony bought out Minolta's camera division and now has the Sony Alpha A100. I found out the sony accepts all of the old Minolta 35mm lenses because it uses Minolta technology and I instantly sold my Canon and went to the Sony. I highly recommend the Sony. It as been an excellent camera so far and u can get old Minolta lenses off of ebay CHEAP and have a damn good DSLR. Just my 2 cents.

Consider the cost and quality of lenses. The camera body is only the beginning. You'll probably invest more in lenses and accessories than the cost of the camera itself. So if you already have some Canon lenses for instance, stick with Canon. Likewise for the Nikon. I researched both and settled on the Canon Rebel. Check for rebates too. Some aren't published.

btw, go to B&H photo... u know u won't be gettin dicked over. if not that then a place local to you, that way you have a real person to talk to if you have any questions about it

i hear the canon G9 is up to par with most DSLR camera's and it retails for much less $499...its 12.1 megapixel

I hear its revolutionary for a point and click camera...its most likely the camera i will be getting soon!

After thinking about it, I think the Rebel XT (not the XTi) would be good for me. I'm new to DSLR, so I think the 8mp will be enough for me starting out, and to practice with. It is also cheaper so it will be easier for me to get started. Then I will have more money to buy a nice lense if I need too.

Let me know how ordering from buydig.com goes.

I've used Canons for the last 30 years, their lens are by far the best.Last being a EOS 3. Just got a XT body only, from Circut City online, best price after a lot of ressearch. Upgrade the lens ,as any with kit are good, but slow.A lot of the low price online units are from China, different from what is sold in the USA!
