So i pulled tha bed off my 89 extra cab to get started on a bag job and found what looks like a proportioning valve deal mounted to the frame...its got 2 lines in, 1 line out that splits to the wheel cylinders, and a rod and lever attached to the axle housing.

Im fairly sure it was for a towing option and i seems like a straight forward "cut it out and run new lines" but i wanted to check and see what everybody else has done cuz i dont see this crap on anyone elses frames.

I can try and post a pick if thatll help.

Preciate the help

yes you can get rid of it. its a leveling valve for your brakes, it you put x amount of weight in your bed the rod with will push the valve and apply more pressure to your brakes. But since i doubt you will be hauling a lot of cargo you can just get rid of it.

(I give Seth credit for telling me when i asked..lol)

just outta curiousity how woul i go about doing that?

He is exactly right. Its is called a LSPV (load sensing proportioning valve). Personally, I prefer to replace them with a proportioning valve, otherwise you could lock up your rear brakes on hard braking, or in wet conditions. I used an adjustable Wilwood PV, but you can also get a factory valve that is meant for disc/drum applications off of a pre-84 2WD truck. They are located right below the master cylinder.

I went to a junk yard and picked up a T and T'd the 3 lines together and bled them. Works fine.

I did the same thing radar did, but a while back some dumbass pulled out right in front of me so i mashed the brakes and my truck locked up and spun 180 on the highway. Would the proportioning valve stop the rear from locking up? .....

what about the line that im assuming is the return line? just ditch it?

Seth with the factory PV your talkin about is there anything else i would need to do as far as the lines?
just wanna make sure i do it rite cuz the last thing i want is my shit to be screwed

im pretty sure you cant just ditch the return line or else how would the fluid get back to the master cylinder?

I just relocated mine further back on the frame and just cut the rod that goes to the axle off...never had any problems this way
