mig welding is about as easy to learn as there is. I would get a 220v macine as I like the extra push u can get. For a Small Machine the lincoln sp-180 is as good as it gets. You can weld for 22ga to 1/4 in without any hassle as long as or joints are set up properly. Get a good book and a bunch of scrap then practice. That particular machine is the ICAR standard. I would use 75/25 gas and ER70s-6 wire. There are a ton of gas and wire combos for different things but for automotive work that will be the most versitile. Use .030-.035 for heavy stuff and .025 for thin sheet.

O yeah tig is a much more precise and focus arc period end of story. It is a slower welding process so it creates a bigger Heat Affected Zone(HAZ).

you can weld thin materials quicker with a tig than a mig because you can turn the heat way down and run a tiny 1/32-3/64 bead on super thin materials and have less warping because the mig would need more heat to fuse the filler along with 2 pieces of metal whereas you can get by with no filler with a good fit on most joint types...

but for the topic at hand, i'd get a small 220v welder and be done with it, the lincoln 175 isnt bad, but i'd prefer the miller 180....

ok i didnt read all this other stuff but heres my two cents....the welder always depends on what your doing. you can get a welder from home depot, shit i have one and i use it all the time. it works on body panels and frame work. its a lincoln 175. some ppl will say thats not big enough for frame work but i have yet to have a weld break on me. as for tig, you cant just jump right into that like mig. tig is also good for body work use just have to know how to control your heat. low heat and some "everdore" think thats how you spell that. long story short buy a small cheap weler to play with then move up if you think its your fortey in life.

My wife was going to buy me the 3200 Lincoln but since most say the 175 is better, I shall get that one. Although, i might have to do some wiring at the house since it is 50+ years old

TIG arc is more focused. As long as you know how to use a TIG properly you can control the HAZ better than with MIG. I have a Lincoln 175 and its great. You can do alot with it considering the size. If you can afford a 220v unit go for it. Most buy the bigger 110v units because the cost is much less.
