the 250 piece set from craftsman is plenty to start out, and a good 1/4" ratchet (the sears ones usually come broken)

a decent set of prybars and selection of hammers (couple ball piens and a 4lb sledge)

dura block makes a nice set of sanding blocks you can usually get for about 50 bucks

when it comes to air tools first on the list is a DA, 1/4" air ratchet, a die grinder, and a 5" pistol grip sander

Depends on if your gonna be doing body work or maybe starting out prepping cars for paint. D A sander is a biggie for paint prep. Defiently a good set of rachet wrecnches. I couldnt work without mine. Go ahead and invest in a good set of deep and shallow sockets. That durablock set is really good but also get a 3m rubber block.

10 LB sledge for fixing hail dents!! Chicken wire , paint sticks and a tin snips. JK A good 1/4 drive air ratchet and metric and standard sockets is a great start. I use my air ratchet every day, next in mine is a 3/8 drive impact, If you can find an old Blue point model they controll the speed very well, i have noticed that i can take out tiny screws with my old blue point far better than with say like a brand new Mac tools impact. The mac tools impact is to zippy zingy fast and it rounds off rusty screws whereas the good 'ol' blue point eases them right out. hope this helps
