for anyone out there whos built their own trailer. what do you suggest for axles? besides buying brand new ones.. would axles from a boat trailer be sufficient to haul a vehicle? what load capacity should it the minimum be?

first off how much does what you ll be towing weigh? then how much does the trailer weigh? find out those two numbers and go with axles a little more than that but i used 3500# axles one with brakes and if i build another it will have brakes on both axles boat axles might work but it depends on how big of a boat trailer they came off of?
for around $200 per axle new that would be the route i would take

hope this helps some

it depends on the carrying capacity, if it was a bigger boat you will be ok, if it is a bass boat look and see what the actual axle is made out of and how many springs it has, if it is made of 2x3 and has 5-6 springs they will be ok, if they are mad of 2x2 with the same spring count they will be ok with a mini on a trailer i am a shop supervisor at a trailer manufactuer and we build boat trailers for triton boats as well as some custom apps...hope this helps

it would just be for a toyota.. unless sometime in the future i actually get a fullsize for a project.. i was just looking for some numbers on what to look for so i can keep an eye out for something i might see for sale. id like to buy one, but i have that whole why buy it when i can build it attitude. i usually overkill stuff anyways when i build it.

the min axle capcity i would recomend is 3500 lbs with at least one axle with electric brakes.if you think tha you might ue this trailer for a ton of use and differnt trucks go with 5000 lbs axles a little overkill but well worth he safety you get from having extra weight carrying cap.

man I have always just bought new ones... there is a trailer yard here that will order 3500# axles, built to your psecs for just over cost. I think I paid like $400 tax and all for the last 2 I bought. that was a few years ago, but its worth it still.

u can buy an 18ft flatbed car trailer at trailers for less here for 3k. cheaper then building one and faster IMO.

you will end up with more than what you can buy them for, you can get a wood decked 18ft dovetail for under 2 grand....
