ok i hooked a volt meter to the wire coming off the alt with the truck running and it said it was putting out 13.6 volts and the hooked it back to the batt and checked it and it said the same..and then with it runnin and i disconect the pos cable it dies....whats the best way to check to see if it is charging the batt

14 volts at idle. anything below 13 get a new one. if you disconnect the + cable and it dies, replace the alt.

i got a guy that rebuilds them looking to see if he can rebuild it and make it outout more...if not im ordering a 160 amp

Your alternator provides power for everything in your truck when running. The battery is there for peak power draw times and is mainly used for starting. You may have cooked the alternator by running it with out the battery connected to it. So an easy test is turn on everything heater high beamns etc and then check the voltage at the battery, if it can't keep up then you need a bigger alternator, also CHECK YOUR GROUNDS! to the engine and battery etc, no rust or corrosion should be present.
