No it's not an autozone P.O.S ..... And I had it tested after I bought it and it passed so I really don't know

and I still don't know if it's internal or external?

That would be my fault. I looked at your profile and thought you were talking about the 1st one listed (87).

A 96 is definately internally regulated. The only other things I could think of that are possibly doing it are a bad ground, bad fusible link (the fuse with the clear top), a short (frayed wire, loose connection, corrosion on battery or cables), or a bad regulator in the new alternator.

When you put it back on the truck did it start back up or was it totally dead?

How much crap are you running on your truck if you got a system some viairs and god knows what else up grade the gauging of your wiring that charges the battery

Thanks alot for all of you help so far guys.....

I'm not running a stereo system of any kind in this truck, or any other extras for that matter lol....I do have two viar 380's but I've always ran two of those dudes.....

The olny think I can think to do is like craig said and check for a bad ground, bad fusible link, a short or a frayed wire, loose connection, or a bad regulator in the new alternator.....

This sucks cause it's my daily driver and all my other shit is taken the fuck apart(exepet the the hungry hungry cadillac)

I'll let you know how it goes.......Thanks again

a buddy of mine had a tacoma a while back that did the same thing. not sure what year it was, mid 90s maybe. i changed the alternator for him and it kept doing it so he took it to a shop and it ended up being the wire that charges the battery from the alternator. again, i didnt do it so thats all i know but it may help. good luck

back right after i b\d the taco i had a similar p;roblem...would charge the battery then die...the alternator was only puttin out 9 volts(the guys always used to call me 9 volt).....seei had my entire interior torn out and i had the gauge cluster sittin on that bar that runs across the interior compartment under the dash...well i was drivin and when i hit the brakes the cluster fell forward and grounded out on that bar....i never knew ir....bought a new alternator from hawaii since my truck was so new alternators cost $500 and only available through the dealer at that time(and its still in my garage)....had my bro go through every fuse imaginable...well he over looked the dash fuses....there is a fuse in there for your gauge cluster...upon further review in the owners manual this fuse is also for you charging system and therefore your alternator....your problem sounds like the same as mine....your engine isnt running off your alternator like it should instead its runnin off the battery and killin it...check you dash fuses for the cluster fuse....as soon as i did that i charged up the battery and fired right up and stayed runnin and never had another problem....spent $300 to fix a problem that only cost $.10 to fix
