My dads' got an '81 P/U(22R) with the factory 4 speed...and actually the truck has like 320k on the STOCK BORE and bearings(crazy ?!)...anyway he got a 5 speed from a guy and had it re-built.

I'm not sure what year the 5 speed is out of and I can get pics if necessary but I know it's probably one of the first year 5 speeds were made.

What parts are needed for the swap? He said it looks like the speedo cable is shorter on the '81 and is on the opposite side on the 5 speed. And he can't find where the back-up light switch is on the 5 speed either...

I haven't looked at it yet but I know between Seth, Lucky, and all the other yoter guys on here someones gotta know.

Thanks hommies.

Get a 22R clutch kit. 22R flywheel isn't necessary, but I think they are a little lighter. And get a speedo cable for a mid 80s Toyota. They attach to the gauge cluster the same way.

I will look on mine to see where the backup light switch is. I thought they where in the same spot, but I have a couple transmissions here I can look at.

Also it would help to know what kind of transmission it is. So, how many bolts hold the shifter mechanism in place? 4, 5, or 6?

i need a 5 speed too! these 4 speeds whine out on low pro tires bad!

but yeah. i put a 5 speed in my old yota. (in my profile pic) basically did the same thing seth is talking about... and im pretty sure that the backuplight is the same as well. i shaved my lights on the old yota so i never hooked it back up so i didnt bother to check.

I just ran out to the garage and it has 5 bolts Seth...

And yeah the truck is a factory 22r so he got the 22r flywheel and cluth kit already.

Aright well then I think that pretty much covers everything(I guess my dad found the back-up switch. Just wanted to make sure there wasn't any un-obvious things that had to be switched.

Thanks guys

Did any 79-83's come with 5 speeds?

The tranny's are the same length but the stick is like 3" farther back...

^ yes! if you find a 5 speed that will fit my 83 - ill buy it! running these 195/45/15s are gonna whine it out! :/

79-83 SR5 trucks came with 5 speeds.

jsondrops looked it up for me... (he works for toyota parts). looks like 8-78 > 7-83 had a 5 speed option. nothing past 7-83 will work. the toyota part # for the 5 speed is 3303035022. its a 5F 5 speed trans. there was also an older part # which was 3303035021. these were defiantely for the sr5, heavy duty and deluxe option trucks! good luck man - let me know if you find anything. i need one too!

My truck is a factory SR5. I removed all of the SR5 options except for the 5 speed and the tach.
