If you have a big enough air compressor to accomodate it, try an angle grinder with a Roloc head on it. They have Bristle Cone wheels that will take anything off metal and leave the metal almost buffed.
Or switch it out for their sanding discs, anywhere from 120 grit to 36 grit. The heavy duty ons work great for killing welds on thicker metal but still being precise
And you can even use one of the stripper wheels
All heads are quick interchange with the proper head, so the job goes by really fast even if you have to swap out heads every 5 minutes
