Ive been thinking adout trying to build some air tanks, would 7" od tube with 1/8 wall and 1/4" flat end plates work? If so, what type of tube should I get, mild steel or DOM? For the end plates dose it matter if its hot rolled or cold rolled?

DOM would be the best idea, it will eliminate the possibility of the seam giving up. And the end plates will probably need to be 1/4" wall considering that at 200psi the plate will see over 7500lbs of force. Finding 1/4" cold rolled isn't always the easiest, but would be a better bet since it is stronger.

hey max do you or do you know of a place to make custom tanks...i need 2 50"x3" diameter tanks to go down the length of my frame....i dont wnna attempt this myself.....i dont want it blowin up on me.

Im building my tanks out of 8" 1/4" wall 6061-T6 alunminium tubing with CNC billet ends that match my spun aluminium gas tank.

Max, whats your thoughts on making the frame a tank, firewall back???

Ive always wanted to know if the ends of air tanks have to bed round like they are? does it help w/ anything? Or is it just to hold a little bit more air?

I did my tanks out of 9" OD 1/4" ASME with 3/4 endplates and had 3/4 NPT holes tapped into each end...That thing took 300 psi no problem.

i made mine out of 8" od 1/4" thick pipe and 1/4" thick end plates i found when working on a recent job site... it was leftover from the guys installing the high pressure fire supression system in a warehouse.

e10pvmt- I don't know of anyone that builds custom air tanks.

laync10- Go back to eating your pancakes with maple syrup

dragginoval- A firewall back frame tank will be too big. Too much more tank than 6 gallons (in my oppinion) is too much for electric compressors and a firewall back tank could easily be double that.

Obey- Tank ends are curved because it is stiffer than a flat plate. That way the tank can be built with thinner material and not flex and crack.

If I go with a thicker wall tubeing like 3/16 or 1/4 can I use something else tham DOM?
