Check out the HAMB online, not minis but lots of old school rods and kustoms to gather ideas from. Just don't tell them you're a minitrucker though, lol.

This was meant to be a utilitarian style truck, with stock patina, steel wheels and black walls. Its similar to the finish of some traditional hot rods I guess, but I really wouldn't call it that.

I personally think that the "old-school look" is for people too cheap to afford paint and rims. All of the rattle-can flat black and steelies are a hell of a lot cheaper than a nice set of wheels and a quality paintjob.

At first when this whole thing started it was a novelty and some of them looked good, but now its a cop-out for not having the money to build a whole truck. Cause lets be honest, if you REALLY wanted to build an "old-school" ride, you wouldn't have started with an S-10.

Exceptions being the sick ass yellow Isuzu posted above, (it's not really old-school, just a set of Baby Moon's. In addition, Plane Jane, the S-10 with the old school chevy 2-piece windshield, etc etc. These I don't consider "old-school" I think of them as being innovative.

I will say that I agree with you on some points. Some of the trucks above definitely fit your cheap description. Trucks with rattle can paint, stock wheels and $45 3/4" whitewalls. But if you buy a new set of steel wheels with whitewalls from Coker, you're looking at the same amount of money as some 18s with tires. Some of those trucks are painted as well.

Now I have to defend myself and the Datsun I built, because I feel it was just put into that cheap group. However I feel it isn't the case. The guy wasn't cheap with the truck. Theres over $12K in parts/material and labor into it as it sits. Theres a lot of unseen work, and a lot of upgrades in ti to make ti safer and more reliable than it was. Under that sheetmetal its basically a brand new truck. His original plans where for orange/cream paint with big Coker whitewalls. After he painted the wheels black and I set the truck on the ground, he changed his mind and sold the Cokers and bought the same size tires in blackwalls. He ditched the paint idea for now in favor of doing a motor swap soon, since the truck has a natural patina there was no sense in primering it.

So, I think in some cases you are right about people being cheap. But I think some people just like the look, and that doesn't make them cheap.

Really? Thats just a ridiculous statement to make. My S10 above runs white walls and smoothies for no other reason than because I like them. I could afford to put any rims I want on my truck FYI. It has nothing to do with being cheap. Just like the rest of my vehicles I drive my S10 and like the fact that I don't have to worry about ruining wheels, spending money on expensive tires, and worrying about a crazy graphic paint job getting scratched. The pics of my truck were from the first month it was back on the road with the suspension done. There is a lot more in store for it including, OMG, flat paint.

What makes the yellow Isuzu not "old school" vs. some of the others posted? It has chrome hubcaps, white walls, and old school mirrors. Because it's painted? Some of the others are as well. As far as Plane Jane goes, it isn't "old school" at all.

I have to dissagree with the "too cheap comment" only in certain respects. While I agree that it is some peoples cheap way out, others do it to fit thier style, just as we do to our own trucks. It all depends on the persons taste. I personally like nice paint, and wheels, etc. However my brother likes the old style look. He uses the truck as a daily and wanted something reliable with an old school flavor because thats what he's into. here are some pics. It's an s-10 with a packard dash, and some other old tricks. The bed is about to be cut to blend a old style trunk and contenental kit to it. Again, he's my brother and while it's not my taste at all, I appriciate it, because there is a lot of work into it, and its his baby... While i have a truck that i love more than anything, the truth is that it blends in with everything else at shows. Every mod he has done is hand done by himself, and that should be looked at with utmost respect. Unfortunately, Guys like him catch shit from the hot rodders, because the truck isnt a "true traditional" and the mini truckers like Matt who say its not "pretty enough"... To true truck builders (most of wich dont have a lot of cash for wheels and paint) its about the blood sweat and tears and craftsmanship of thier babies, not a 10 grand paint job and 5 grand wheels. Fabrication is priceless. I wish i had my bros tallent... And besides, I think it is nice to have something different than 30 candy painted s-10's on 20's to look at when walking through a show...
