So now i got the quadcab basicly fabbed up im looking towards possible motor options. When i started i had no intentions of making a quadcab so i figured the stock 4cyl would do but now theres 33'' of extra truck and 3 more asses that the motor wasnt designed to haul. Some have told me a built 4cyl will handle the extra weight fine and some have told me it wont. Ive thought of putting the v6 out of a 4runner in it but ive heard those motors have issues too. Im not looking to smallblock it since im going to be driving it everywhere and want good mileage. Would a tacoma motor do better? Should i go ahead and build the 4cyl? Am i just being paranoid?

The stock 22re is a great engine and with a small build would be fine. Mine runs great. The v6 3.0l in my driver is ok too but its got problems. If I was in your shoes I wish I was Nice truck I would just put a small block in it and a 700r trany and be done. Mybe step up to an LS1 and a 4l60e and be fuel Injected.

Well to answer your question with another question would be: What are the guys over in Australia running in their quadcab trucks?? If Im not mistaken most of them have the 4cyl engine in their Toyota's & if they can handle the extra weight/room & espically the harsh conditions then I think
your engine will do the job. I think if you build it by adding some LC Engineering goodies then youll have the power you need. As for the V6 engine Ive never had one, but Ive known a few guys that have & they have had nothing but problems with them.

it took me a while to find this post but here it was. I hope it provides perhaps a little more insight. Keep in mind even 4runners have 4cyls....My brothers 4runner 4 wheels pretty good and gets excellent mileage with his 4cyl.

the 3.0 is all torque you can pull a house with it. but wont get out of its own way. go with the 22RE

Well then i guess im going with the 4cyl. Im pretty sure itll need gone through but what should i look to replace/upgrade as i do it. I wouldnt be opposed to putting a turbo on but i dont know if i need to go that extreme.

do a 2rz swap for a tacoma , lots more torque

you could always run a 1jz, 2jz, 302, 12 or 13b rotary...

If you want to stick with the 22R (RE?), I would upgrade the cam and valves, timing chain, carb and header. All the power is in the top end of these motors. LC Engineering makes a great rocker system as well for these motors. Oversized stainless valves paired with a torquey cam would probably do you fine.
