i think that it comes down to the welds and the baffles( add strength). where i work we make a lot of alum fuel tanks, water tank and toolboxes and fit them to lots of 4x4 and boats.we use minimum of 3mm alum for all fuel tanks and they are tacked up corner to corner with a consistent bead of penetration on the inside of the weld.
they only crack when the mounts are welded on in a shitty location like in the middle of the tank or are excessivley undercut or have no penetration. we( our workshop) lifetime warranty our work on everyjob so its crucial we do it right the first time
