I bought the C-10 in my profile from a guy who restored it. All of the body and paint he did is about 12 years old now and some parts are starting to show through. (Like at the bottom of the doors.) In another spot on the back of the cab there's a lot of body filler. I want to get the truck in bare metal to see what else there is. Is this a good idea or will I be wasting time and money?

personally i wouldnt do that. your basicaly going backward and will waste alot of time. if the bodywork has been done that long and there are only a few areas that are showing bad signs i would just work on fixing the areas that are bad.

Take it to bare metal and replace whatever needs replacing is the only way to know what you are working with. Its def worth the time and money

even if you got body work that has been on there for 12yrs and hasnt shown signs of failing?? your just gunna redo something that is apprently already done right.

if you were to take this to a REAL painter or shop that did quality work it would be going down to the metal. Most shops do not paint over other people's body work unless a pre-arranged agreement has been made.

Keef is right, theres even huge benefit in taking all the old paint off. Fewer layers will give you a much better base so things in the old paint dont start moving around.

it all depends on what your looking to get out of the vehicle.

If you want full show, then yes I'd strip it again. However if your happy with whats on there, and just unsatisfied with the poor areas, then I'd only fix the small spots.

As I said, its all in what you need out of it.

I whould have it media blasted. Then I whould survey the body and all that needs to be repaired. Then epoxy seal the body, you can do all your repairs over the epoxy also gives you great corrosion protection.
