I appreciate all the responses. Now the next question is what is the best way to strip the old paint? I've heard a little about media blasting but not much about chemical stripping. Thanks.

I have chemical stripped an entire vehicle before.... Not my idea of a great weekend! Its a way to do it but is a lot of work and a P.I.T.A! Another problem with chemical stripping is it takes a while and after you expose bare metal it starts to rust, so you will need to treat the bare areas rather quickly after stripping them. I would media blast them and then shoot it with an epoxy primer very soon after.

You could Soda blast it takes it to bare metal and you can leave all your windows trim exc on it. I don't know much about it thats what Ive heard from other people

I would just strip it with some 100 grit discs on an 8" grinder with a foam pad. That way you have good mechanical adhesion. I dont like chemical stripping.

Media blasting works well, but its costly, and takes time. Where as you could probably strip the truck in a day or 2, with some roloc discs, and some sandpaper.

Depending on the vehicle if you use a grinder it heats up and can warp the metal if not done correctly. Not saying it cant be done that way, It can depending on your skill level when it comes to bodywork.

depending on layers of paint, use a razor blade. i usually do that and itll get me ot the last couple of coats. takes awhile but saves u costly sandpaper. whats wrong with soda blasting keef? but if this isnt a show truck, i would just repair whats going bad, 8 times outa 10 its probably the lower part of the panel having rust pop through so technically the rest "isnt bad" just cuz it was done 12 years ago which would be 1996. im pretty sure they still had good products then. not like it was done in 76.... as far as fixing the spots and painting an all over if thats what u want, i would atleast hit it with 80 grit to see what kind of paint is on it.

James like someone else mentioned it depends on what he wants out of the ride.....If its show vehicle then def strip it and start fresh, if its a driver that he plans on selling repair the spots, block whole thing with 180 and epoxy prime it then block and paint as usual
