I used to say the same thing. I had been working in the field, full-time, running equipment, doing electrical work and pretty much everything else, since I was 17. I worked for several companys, including my Dad's, so I'm pretty well rounded in most trades. I thought I would never take a desk job.
Eventually, I started taking Foreman positions for a couple of different G.C.'s, then I started working as a Superintendant for a company that did a lot of work for the oil companys. I liked being a Super. Lots of time in the field, but when it gets too hot/cold, you still get a nice climate controlled trailer to hang out in.
When the Project Management position opened, I wasn't really interested at first. Then I started thinking about the future.
It's really kinda cool. I still get alot of field time, I just don't get dirty. The pay is great, and I have *TONS* of perks. My office is about 45 mins from my house, so I don't have to drive all over California, and deal with SoCal traffic, to get to work anymore.
However, my wife does give me a hard time about "my hands getting softer and my belly getting bigger".
Oh well.
