Can you guys tell me if i can sand my paint off with some sort disc on a 4" sander/grinder? I have a da but my compressor isnt big enough to handle the cfm it needs.

you can use a 80 grit flap disc or even finer if you can find one

Just go at it by hand with a longboard, any grinder will mark the surface and make even more finishing work for you at the end. I made the mistake of using a 120 flap disc and it left grooves everywhere.

I like using stripper to get down to the etching primer then using a da or soft block with 180 to scuff it up for bodywork and new primer. I dont recommend using grinding discs unless if you plan on doing alot of bodywork in that area. Even if there are no grinding marks you will still see waves on the first several coats of primer if you prime directly onto the bare metal.

if its the factory paint i wouldnt worry about it.

DON'T use a grinder flapper wheel 80 grit will not only groove but with a grinder you are only using an edge to grind with, this creates a lot of heat and can cause your sheetmetal to warp. you should be using a DA to sand with it does not create heat because it is flat larger surface creating less heat. use something like a 320 or a 400 and you'll be good.

yeah. i wouldnt use a grinder to do it either. if air is the concern, get an electric DA. or if its just for stripping, get a square orbital. they leave small curls in the metal, but if its not for finishing, its cheaper to buy. and you can just get paper in squares saving more.

Thanks for the replys guys. I need to take it down to bare metal as th epaint is really thick on top of 45 year old paint so it needs to come off. I have a air da but my compressor took a dive and dont have the money right now to buy a new one. So maybe ill be long boarding with 80 grit.

Use a chemical stripper and a putty knife. Then just make sure you clean the metal really good before you spray your primer.
