hardware store nuts should deffinately be fine they arent structurally important just there to lock it up.grade 8 or something like that.hell i'd get a rough measurement and grab a bunch of different sizes. you can always take them back.

Id head up to a Fastenal(or comparable store). They can get you ANYTHING you need. Thats where i buy everything, bolt or nut wise

I HAVE AN OLD PETE AND JAKES 4-LINK FROM MY SONOMA AND THEY ARE JUST 3/4" FINE THREAD JAM NUTS. I CAN'T REMEMBER IF IT IS 3/4-16 OR WHAT. JUST GO TO YOUR LOCAL FASTENER VENDOR AND THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO HELP. I HAVE A BUNCH OF THEM LAYING AROUND AT MY HOUSE TOO. SUICIDE DOORS HAS THEM TOO.

speedwaymotors.com sells both right and left hand thread steel and aluminum jam nuts in sizes 1/2" thru 3/4" They also sell the 4 link bushings that fit into the pete and jakes 4 links. they are like hard plastic though.

just a question since we are on this subject, hope you don't mind, but what kind of damage does it really do without the jam nuts. mine back themselves off at least once a month and i have to retighten them. its like whenever the axle articulates it pops the nut loose, defeating its purpose. am i really damaging anything driving on it like that before i realize they came loose?

Its dangerous! Loose threads are weak, its better to overtighten them then have them loose.
