its not new bars... they are probly 10 years or more old. but still rust free!! just been on and off a few times and somewhere in the mix of it all, lost 3 of the jam nuts. im just trying to get some more so i can get setup safe. we already called pete and jakes about it a while back and they basically said they wont even talk about the bars i had.

Its dangerous! Loose threads are weak, its better to overtighten them then have them loose.

overtightning will cause the bolt to stretch causing it to fail by making it more brittle.

Every bolt size has a recommended torque and they are listed on the internet ....... REMEMBER GOOGLE IS YOUR FRIEND

Ya, thanks, BUT an over tightened bolt is MUCH stronger than a loose bolt. The guy asked if he really needed jam nuts.

just a question since we are on this subject, hope you don't mind, but what kind of damage does it really do without the jam nuts. mine back themselves off at least once a month and i have to retighten them. its like whenever the axle articulates it pops the nut loose, defeating its purpose. am i really damaging anything driving on it like that before i realize they came loose?

I'll just throw this up so you can read it again.

Heres another thread on jam nuts.

I'll quote Max Fish on this topic:
"A thread that isn't tight is exponentially weaker then a properly tightened part."

I guess what I meant to say is that I would rather slightly overtighten a nut or bolt than just leave it loose by not tightening it at all.

For best results contact Pete and Jakes through their website. It's a great company with well informed workers. Their suspension page

Just some observations on things since I've had the same bucket for 12 years.

Loose jam nut.. The rod end or heim will eventually rip out the threads from the part wobbling. It will damage the bar and the heim. One instant of a strut bar splitting from vibration cause by a loose nut.

I've had the nut back down a few times only lost one when it pulled out of the bar for some reason. Ace Hardware or any good quality hardware store will carry a replacement. For the watts kits we used to get them from Ace, McMaster or from Danny at Beckman industries.

I've done it two ways on the truck. 1. One of my (TCI)lower bars has the nut tacked to the bar after it was correctly tightened.

2. Locktite the threads and secure the nut to the correct torque. You don
