ok so a buddy of mine had me pick up his 87 mazda ext cab.  its already bagged.  just wants me to bodydrop it and fix a few things.  anyways its on the trailer purrin like a kitten chargin up the battery cuz it had died.  running fine for about twenty minutes.  i back it off the trailer and go to drive up the street.  so far so good.  when i go to shift into second it dies.  i thought it was out of gas cuz it was low and the incline from the trailer could've caused it to suck up air in the lines.  i go get some gas and put it in.  still nothing.  it doesn't even try to run.  it just cranks and cranks.  i look into the carb and its getting fuel.  i can see it flowing thru the inline filter fine.  next i think it lost spark some how.  nope its getting spark.  so the only thing i could think of was the timing belt went.  but i opened the oil cap and had him crank it over and the cam is popping the lifters fine.  it just doesn't wanna run.  we let it sit for an hour thinking we could've flooded it.  came back out and still nothing.  anybody have any clue, ideas, or advice that could help me out.  any help would be appreciated.  thanks-jason

clutch your first and second syncro is not fully ingageing thats my guess that was actually a test question for the manual trans class at UTI

i don't think thats it.  the tranny is fine.  it was driving fine then it bogged down as if it were running out of gas.  put gas back it and now it won't fire back up.  the motor will just crank and crank but won't fire up.  its got spark, its got fuel ( i can see it pump out the jets when the pedal is hit), and its got spark.  the cam is turning so i dont think its the timing belt.  no wierd noises or pops or anything so i dont think it jumped time.  it just bogged down like it lost fuel.  i couldn't imagine the tranny syncros keepin it from firing up.

pull the top peice timing belt cover off and check the cam gear the hole for the pin on the end of the cam had worn the hole out in my cam gear did the same as your talking about it was just a small bit but it did stop the truck from running put a new gear on a started right up and your belt might be jumping the gear if its worn if your looking at just your valves they would still be moving but that dont mean its right

my nissan did the same thing i changed out the carb because i thought that was the problem \, it had been having problems. ended up being the distributor. so i just put a new capon and it fired up.

Mine did the same thing after I got water in my tank. follow the line that goes from the fuel pump to the front of the carb. Take that loose and crank it. You should be able to shoot the neighbors cat with it pretty good. If you think that you are getting good pressure from the pump, hook the line back up and crank it over. There is a little hump on the carb where that line goes in. Tap it with a wrench as the truck gets turned over. This tapping is what made mine fire back up after my water incident. Also, does it fire with starting fluid? If it does, then you do have a fuel problem.   Does it have the stock carb? If it does, it needs a Weber. Does it still have all of the emissions stuff? If it has a Weber, it won't. If it has the stock carb and doesn't have it, I would stop messing with it. Removing the emissions on a stock carb in a Mazda kills them.

its bone stock.  nothing's been removed.  its getting fuel.  i poured some gas directly into the car and it didn't even try to start.  its getting fuel.  you can see it pump out the jets as you hit the gas pedal.  also while cranking you can see it flowing through the fuel filter.  everything is bone stock under the hood.  nothing's been removed.  it has been sitting on my trailer for about three weeks so water in the tank is a good possibility especially since its been sitting without the bed on it.  the only thing that makes me think its not the fuel is cuz it didn't even try to fire up when fuel was poured into the carb.  like said before its getting spark so it should atleast try right???

With a good spark at the right timing yes it should atleast try to run. Im going to guess either the timing belt skipped a tooth or two or that spark isnt hot enough for some reason now. Have your buddy pay for a tune up on it. Fuel filter/ air filter/ plugs, wires, dist. cap and rotor.    Check the timing belt first though.

Also if the battery isn't good it can affect the runability along with a bad alternator...long story on how i know this

Cause and effect.... The battery was dead, you jumped it and had it idling on the trailer to "charge" the battery. An alternator is not designed to charge a battery, it is meant to maintain it. You surely aren't going to get much out of it at idle, most likely the load on it when trying to move it was too much and there wasn't enough power. Pull the battery and slow charge it overnight and see if it will start then. If not I would try starting it with a different battery.   Just because it cranks doesn't mean it has enough juice to fire.   As for that first reply, if that where the case the truck would still start but would not move.
