If your trying to stop rust, primer isnt going to protect the metal. Primer is for filling sand scratches and imperfections/prep for blocking. You need to use a sealer and yes white sealer can be tinted to almost any color you like.

Rustoleum Satin. $9 a quart at Home Depot. Thin it w/ acetone and you have yourself a body condom

where can i get acetone from and what would the ratio be?

First off if there is any bare metal you need to put etch prime on it. Go to your local automotive paint store and ask what they would recomend for etch prime and primer. I cant think of the good stuff off the top of my head but i think its 990 or 980 etch prime from sherwin williams and p30 primer. Im sure they can tint it for you at the store. Thats what i use daily and i have never had a problem.

I am currently doing the same thing to my truck and I was told buy the local paint shops that epoxy primer with catylized is the best kind of primer that will seal the metal and withstand the weather conditions without paint over it, and I have found it in black, gray and different shades of white, It runs about $100 a gallon around here but comes with a gallon of catylized so it makes 2 gallons sprayable wich is plenty for anything

How hard is it to prep the surfaces AFTER running cheaper alternatives such as Rustolum, for any amount of time?

no there isnt any bare metal.. it was painted but the body work on the bed and fenders sucked so i sanded them to smooth it out and now looking for primer. ill be running that for awhile.

You dont wanna use that laquer primer over any bare metal. Like someone already said you need to etch the bare spots. If the whole truck is metal Id shoot epoxy on it. If you use epoxy it willl be protected and when its time for body work you just sand it and and put your filler right on top of it. What I did on mine was strip to bare metal, rough in all major bodywork with 80 grit, mix my epoxy as a sealer and get a nice coat on everything. Now when Im ready to paint I will just sand all the epoxy with like 180, llay a few good coats of slick sand sprayable polyester bodyfiller, block that out with 180, fix any minor imperfection that shows up in blocking, lay a few more coats of slicksand, block with 320, seal, paint.
