Go with the Nikon D40. SLR is amazing. I have a Canon SLR and the options to upgrade lenses, flashes, etc is unlimited. I also recommend the book SLR for Dummies if you get it!

But also depends if you want and SLR or all in one before getting into an SLR, plus look at the accessories like lenses you would have to buy for an SLR. Just stuff to think about. Lot of photographers I've seen use Cannon SLR's.
