so a 4000 hp top fuel dragster frame is made of chrome molly and you dont think it would be streetable? thats crazy.

BUT a stainless mig or stick weld will be more brittle and not as visually appealing as a tig. and for stainless wire you would not have to use a spool gun, but you would have to run straight argon gas

actually let me correct myself on that. the straight argon is for aluminum. stainless uses 75/25 argon/co2 mix depending on the grade. tigging stainless is just like tigging mild steel, and a hell of a lot easier than aluminum. it just flows out so much better and is much more of a controlled arc. one day I plan on making an air tank out of stainless everything I do gets pressure tested,  so I know I shouldn't have a problem with leaking. I just need to find a reason to build a tank lol

well what i was refering to with it being streetable is that roads (around here anyway) are a hell of lot rougher and more pot holes and bumps than what on a straightline 1/4 mile track. has anyone seen a chrome-moly tube chassis on a mini truck?

i dont know anything about making a stainless frame but ive tigged stainless stuff before lol. exhaust pipes and ive made 2 fuel cells for 2 hot rods at work. I love welding it, like eric said, a hell of a lot easier than aluminum. i wouldnt do a frame out of it just because of how much of a bitch it is to work with, grinding isnt all that bad but drilling, it SUCKS! if you wanted a shiney frame, couldnt you build one and have it bolt together somehow and have it chromed??? thats what Jesse Greening  (Greening auto company) did for Steve Traceys (Advanced Plating) Chromezilla 32 ford...

also about chromolly, not to be an ass but the top fuel and funny cars are around 8000 hp, not 4000 lol. but we are building a 57 chevy at the shop thats got a fully chromolly tube chassis under it, i dont know all the properties and chassis shit but this thing looks and feels pretty damn rigid, i guess time will tell if we have any problems out of it, and its also a pro-touring type car thats gonna get some major abuse on the track and street

Here is the build page I made for it back when Gumby had it http://wcpconline.com/2005taco/SIAC.htm Sean at http://www.seriouslyinsaneautoconcepts.com/ did all the suspension, framework and built the hood.    He's on here somewhere.

Mild steel and stainless steel can be welded together using a 309 rod. The weld puddle is a lot different when welding stainless compared to using like a 7018 or 6010 rod on mild steel. You can also get 308 or 309 welding wire for a mig gun using a 75/25 or 100% argon mixture.
