I notched my fire wall for the distro and then opened up my tunnel for transmission.  Let me tell you, this was a great idea.  It is nice to be able to get your hands around the transmission, if and when something goes wrong.  You will not be disappointed by doing this before you slide it in.  It also allows you to move the motor back and gives you room for a big radiator and also moves more of the weight to the rear for traction.   Also, I started off with a TH350.  If you run a Toyota rear end, dont bother, if you plan to drive this on the highway.   The Toyota rear end comes factory with 4:10 gears.  With that, the TH350 is awsome from light to light, but you will only get about 60mph at best for top speed.  And the motor is winding out.  I next opted for the 700r4, and that was perfect.  It still had the torque like the 350, but that extra gear and then lock up made it very nice on the highway.  The top speed is around 110 with the 4:10 gears.   I have to tell you that the rear ends in the Yotas are ok, but mine started whining right away.  There are allot of after market parts for these things to beef them up, but it might be cheaper to go with like a 9in.   I have some pics of mine on my profile, let me know if you have other questions, Good Luck, Billy

hey billy what headers did you use on your maz

Oh Yeah, by moving it back a bit it makes for the headers to be a breeze.  I used block hugger headers.  It drops them down behind the front cross member and gives you room to turn and head back. I forgot to mention that I ran a carburetted 350 and was able to drop the motor back which also also allows you to drop it down.  Moving it back enough to put the oil pan behind the font cross member allows you to run a shallow filter and still keep the factory hood without cutting it all up.  Makes for a real sleeper....Till you crank up at least...

I am currently doing a 350 in my mazda and i found a good option for a rear diff, its a ford 8" out of a maverick.  Its an inch narrower than the stock mazda axle and it has 5 - 4.5 bolt pattern so if you did the toyota clip its perfect.

Witch years of the maverick?
