I use 2 small commercial electric shop heaters. they are about 300 each. 220 volt. I can get my 2 car garage up to 80 with them on a 10 degree day. workable temperatures within 20 minutes. they are cheap to run, they don't smell or make fumes, they are quiet, i don't need to mess around with kerosene or propane, i didn't have to run a gas line out to my garage, and when i sell the house i can unplug them and take them with me to use at my next place.

My furnace for the house is right by the garage so we put a T-connect and ran it into the garage where I have another furnace and complete duct work for 4 vents in the ceiling. the garage is fully insulated floor to ceiling, with double pane windows so It's pretty nice to be able to work in the garage in negative degree weather and not be cold.  But in the summer I turn the valve and save on my gas prices.
