Just wondering if anyone has done this to make it easier to bag a fwd vehicle. Would the drive shaft be able the cope with it? I would think it would be ok as long as the geometry is in check.

I know that the Camaro that was done for SEMA was a mac strut car that was converted to double a-arm. It was rear wheel drive though, so no issues with the axle. You will be fine doing it as far as the driveshaft goes though, as long as the geometry is good.

What kind of car?I am actually thinking about doing the opposite, getting rid of the upper a-arm and going to macpherson

My friend wants to bag his hhr and after reading garagebuilt's thread, air struts kinda look like a pain in the ass. And my friend won't even consider juicing it, he's determined to have bags.

yeah i thought about doint upper arms but there is only enough room for 6" uppers which wouldnt work. now that mine is done i actually dont mind the mac struts cause the camber isnt too bad. if you dont care about it laying out in the front, the new airlift struts get pretty low. i think if you made a spacer and moved the bearing and mount to the top side it may get real close to laying. here is a pic of an hhr on them

Is the subframe in the way or the inner fender? I haven't gotten a chance to check his hhr out, but I was thinking of fabbing a whole new subframe that would in essence z it(lifting the whole engine/transmission and suspension) relieving some cv angles when it's really low and maybe even allowing it to lay out on 20"s. Would 20"s even fit in the fenders?

its the inner part of the unibody thats in the way. im sure you could get enough out of the way to do it but the motor mounts are right there on the inside. to get it to lay on 20s and not rubber bands you will need to cut out alot of structural stuff but it will be real close to the fender. its like a dodge so you could bring the tops of the tires in with camber and clear it. it wouldnt be bad building a new subframe or Zing the stock one. and the motor mounts would be real simple to raise. are you planning on laying body?

I have a set of easy street struts for a cobalt/ion/hhr if you decide to bag the hhr.
