all the dslr Canon cameras use the same EF lenses...the OLDER film cameras used a a fd mount and are not compatible...the thing i like most about canon, is if you are serious about photography, you can get more camera for the money vs Nikon...both are excellent brands tho.the numbers on the lens tell you focal length and f stop...the smaller the f stop number the larger the aperature, which is good for low light situations...the focal length is going to determine how close or far away you can be from your subject...  and dont get caught up in the mega pixel race...anything over 6 mp is going to be fine for printing pics out up to 11x14..and def. going to be fine for the web

heres a really good deal for you to start with if you decide to go Canon...I would stay away from the XS, its a "bare Bones" DSLR really just for people who want to move up from point and shoot..kind of like the get you hooked on  dslr camera....its ok, but the auto focus isnt as good as some of the other rebels and a few other things... http://www.adorama.com/US%20%20%20%20371313.htmlI would also suggest getting the 50mm f1.8 lens

I have a Canon EOS Rebel T1i and it has treated me well for an introductory level SLR.  15.1 megapixles and takes HD video as well.  Bought mine from Costco.com with two lenses for about $900.00.  I'm still learning, but from a beginners point of view it seems pretty user friendly.

I'm  a Canon guy, so I am going to tell you to go with Canon...Nikon guys are going to tell you to go with Nikon....both are great cameras...Its not so much about the camera as it is knowing how to use it....whichever you choose, go buy a book by Bryan Peterson "Understanding Exposure" and you will be set..good luck
