i didnt really know where to post this so hopefully a moderator can correct itso im used to pulling trailers, but i recently had an issue id like some input on...i normally pull trailers without trailer brakes which has never been an issue but i recently pulled one with trailer brakes and everytime i even tapped my brakes on my truck the trailer tires locked up immediately...how do i fix this? i had to unplug the wiring on the trailer which also left me without lights which is one thing i dont like...i was once told that i could pull a particular fuse in my truck which will disengage the trailer brakes but ill still have lights....is that true? and where is it if it is true? i have a 2004 chevy 2500hd...its too bad i cant find a trailer for a good deal so i could stop borrowing or renting trailers

If you have a brake controller for traile rbrakes there are are 2 setting on there to adjust the trailer brakes. Like a porportioning valve but manual to adjust how much pressure is needed and it will change with or without a load. Hope this helps somewhat sorry i dont know what fuse to tell you to pull

Did you have to use an adapter for the light plug?? Some of those are wired different and you may have to change the wires inside the adapter. I think you can change the brake and auxilary wire.

Im no expert,  but I would say that you need a brake controller to solve youre problem just like was mentioned before.....

Doesnt matter if you barrow a little 4x10 trailer or a 25 foot enclosed trailer when stopping with a load  you want as much stopping power as possible a 50 dollar brake box is better then a 20-40 dollar truck and someones trailer and vehicle on it and that dead person in front of you when you cant stop that load in time. Not trying to be a prick just trying to help. But if you did use an adapter make sure the wires are in the correct way they are something not in the right spot. Good luck

sumthins probly wired wrong in your plug i think ..cuz my trailer brakes wont work witout a brake controller box..i would check all the wrining and buy a brake box..trailer brakes are 100% worth having working..i was in the mountains one time and without them i woulda been off the cliff towing my trk..

if you tow a car trailer with out brakes, that is dumb IMO.

with over 500,000 miles under my belt towing our trailer I would say anyone is crazy for not having a trailer brake no matter what the load. I have witnessed too many yard sales in  the medians across the country from people not having trailer brakes. Two main causes of trailer wrecks...no brakes or too much of a load for the truck that's doing the towing. A buddy of mine had no trailer brakes going to slammin one year and jack knifed just from someone pulling out in front of him. messed up his truck and his trailer plus had to change his pants. lol. Nothin like lookin at the side of your trailer, out your driver window, while  looking out the front window at traffic coming at you! lol my guess your harness is wired up wrong. you probably have your brake lights on the truck feeding your trailer brakes. so every time you hit your brakes it send a positive signal to lock your brakes up instead of getting an adjustable feed from a a brake controller.  Do yourself a favor and grab a test light and check out the plug situation. It only takes a few minutes.
