yeah trailer brakes are def a must.Going through the mountains in NC and Tn i pretty much glazed my brakes on the tow pig...def forgot to adjust to the situation coming down those damn things. So i turned em up so and start letting the trailer slow me down.I couldnt imagine towing anything without brakes thats for damn sure

Was it a brake system on the trailer that sensed when you braked?  I rented a dump trailer that every time it sensed you stopping I went for a ride.  No way to fix that as it is totally on the trailer (if this is the case)On a side note spend the few bucks get a controller and be safe.  Sounds like you have enough invested in the tow pig already.

you are insain for not running trailer brakes,  better hope a DOT man dont stop you they will clean your clock for ya, park your shit on the side of the road and have it towed for you and let you pay all the bill's they are just nice that way. a nice brake box can be had for less than a $100.00, hell i will give you one if you send me you add.

---------------------------------------------Originally posted by DropEmWearmy guess your harness is wired up wrong. you probably have your brake lights on the truck feeding your trailer brakes. so every time you hit your brakes it send a positive signal to lock your brakes up instead of getting an adjustable feed from a a brake controller.  Do yourself a favor and grab a test light and check out the plug situation. It only takes a few minutes. ---------------------------------------------

i agree. it sounds like your getting all 12v to your trailer brake signal wire. that signal SHOULD be coming from the controller.

That is the problem. brake light wire going into trailer brake wire.  You have to use a controller for this to work with electric brakes.  If you can't drop a little cash ($40-90) for a controller you really shouldn't be towing anything.  If you were pulling your ranger on a light duty car trailer behind a 1-ton dually you could get away with it, not saying it's a good idea.
