i tell u man i have done this multiple times here is ur problem plain and simple. if ur gunna tape on top or base coat u have to to use sealer first. now yes u can do it but i have found this makes everything grip so tight u wont have any problems. its insurance once u do this u can put duct tape down if u want. i have done it the other way but i had to use dull tape or blue tape. it takes too much time or cost too much. with sealer spray whatever the he double hockey sticks u want. bro ive done well over a hundred full on graphic jobs and everyone is tape crazy.

what exactly will the sealer do? are you refering to intercoat or clearcoat? i'm new to all this so just try to bear with me.

well if ur spraying over a plastic substrate u need some kind of adhesion promoter. use duponts plas-stic series they sell it in a aerosol can. spray one coat of that and then follow up with a coat of sealer. then follow up with base. the plas- stic help stic to the plastic and sealer the sealer helps the base stick. i will agree with brian base is your weakest link. it also helps to dull the tape with your pants it picks up the lint and takes just enough of the tack away. do these steps and u will never go wrong. make sure ur sealer is sealer, primer wil have too much talc and may cause issues if you do. i have done it before but had alot of touch ups.

where can i get those dupont paints and do they have some effects like metallics and stuff like that?

id shy away from using activated or catalyzed base for multicolor graphics.  i use non activated for the fact that i can do multi colors and leave them past the window and only an over reduced coat of intercoat clear will rebite and freshen the window for clear. been doing 100s of jobs like that... lol. u dont need a sealed substate either. if its prepped properly and no shiney spots u can tape all day over a basecoat that was just over primer.  now plastic, u wana have a substrate that is sticking to the plastic to want to put base over it. but are u using rattle can paint??????? if so theres ur problem. start with only automotive grade products and the advice u were given on here and ull do fine.

go to a store that sells DuPont's plas-stic seriously its a life saver. shinny spots? are u working on shiny lexan? proper way: plastic abs object, sand thorough with 5-600 anything more u will create plastic fuzz(very bad), plastic adhesion promoter (plas-stic .... nothing better), you may prime(i do only if i create imperfections from preping), seal coat (epoxy two-part or hok urethane sealer), let flash go straight over with base, then do whatever u want after that. the reason i seal is some base coats are very low in bite. some are so high they attack everything. primer is a horrible foundation for graphics especially plastic objects. this guy has not done hundreds of jobs .....lol .. i doubt he has done a couple. trust me follow the steps that are safe till u got lots of money for failure. i don't get on here much to give help don't really have time but when i give any advise it is always through trail and error i have spent a lot of money getting good and learning. then i picked up all the books and tech manuals. since u are a beginner or weekend painter i would not buy large amounts of paint from auto zone or anywhere. go to ur local paint store and get the catalyzed products (primer, clear, SEALER) then get on ur computer and type in coastairbrush.com. you may get starter kits from House of Kolor with more than enough colors to do whatever u want and they aren't that much when u see what all u get. coast man coast talk to Jen  she is pretty cool ............Jimmy AZ ART 6027609339

The whole reason for using rattle can is cause it's cheaper for small projects. These are personal projects so it's not like i'm getting paid to do them. If i get the kits like the hok ones, i don't know if i'll ever use the colors again. Trust me, i would love to get oodles of colors but it's just not in the budget for me, rattle can is cheaper at the moment.

the kits arent that much have if u priced them u can also specify a small amount of the colors u do want with coast u dont have to get the kits. this thread is pointless if u continue to use rattle cans. i wish i could tell u the right way to do it but most are laquer base products=disaster.

I looked at those kits and they are out of my price range right now. I just don't have the money to get the good stuff, my job is very low paying right now and the freelance thing hasn't kicked off yet but I see what you all are saying. I'll just buy a bottle of color at a time. Ive seen where you can get HOK in a rattle can, does this change the quality?
