I'd still try rebleeding the master at the end of the fluid line, at the slave, and adjusting the pushrod to try to get as little play into it as possible. When you are at idle, first gear shouldn't crunch like you are experiencing. It just seems like the first thing to do is eliminate the possibility that the master and slave aren't doing their job.

I guess my concern is what adjustments do I need to make. I have never done anything like this so really don't know what I would need to change there.

Bleed the system well. Visually ensure that the operating lever on the side of the transmission is moving a decent amount.

I believe that the only adjustment would be under the dash at the pedal linkage.
