'77 Camper Special: The Official Build Thread

So I’m bored at work and I figured what better way to spend company time than by starting a real, bonafide build thread for the Camper Special for all you freaks to salivate over. I suppose I’ll start with a brief synopsis of the end result that I’m shooting for.

My initial reaction was to go old school all the way. No aluminum, chrome wheels, etc. However, I have since caught a vision that I am fairly certain I will see through ‘till the end. I always liked to look of a stock classic, slammed on big billets, so that’s what I’m gonna do.

I wasn’t too sure about the colors at first, but after a bit of research, I found that there is indeed a bit of history behind the hues:

We have a local plumbing company ‘round these parts called Hitt Plumbing. Hitt’s always been a cool company – lowered baby blue and white Chevy duallys with work boxes on them, slick looking Peterbilt dump trucks, and real clean John Deere equipment. Chris Hitt, the owner, always had a nice lowered Chevy dually he ran around in painted in company colors. Turns out, this truck was one of his firsts…then came a tough second life as a shop truck for my buddys fab shop. I picked her up sans drop kit, to my dismay.

So the colors stay as a throwback to this trucks utilitarian beginning. The trim and all the badges are staying too. So are all the lights…so yeah, it’s gonna be pretty much stock looking. Same goes for the interior, which is already turning out to be a pain in the ass. Seems the Camper Specials aren’t that high on the aftermarket list, so finding the missing/broken/faded trim pieces is starting to become challenging. If anyone has any C.S. stuff laying around, hit me up.

Much to the dismay of all you lemmings out there, this is one truck that won’t be getting bagged…at least not as of right now. I’m not saying bags will never happen, just not right now. Going static. Something in the neighborhood of a finely tuned 6/8. If you want to tell me how unmanageable that will be, don’t. I’ll make it work. Or I’ll lift it up a bit. Point is, let me do what I want.

As for wheels, I’m surprisingly wishy-washy. I’d really like to do some 19’s with a 255/50/19, but I’m hesitant to roll your run of the mill round hole Alcoa’s. I really like the way Pig’s wheels turned out. Maybe I could get his blessing and have Trevor cut me a set in 19’s. Semi’s are out…I can’t bring myself to spend $800+ bucks for adapters alone. Plus, the tires would kill me. There’s always the old stand by though: 16â€
