I had a bagged 97' S10. I loved that truck and I must be honest, I am still a GM guy at heart. I never did an engine swap in it, but the 4.3L was great. Unlimited amount of aftermarket parts and information on S10 V8 swaps and modifications. So many people have done them. The S10 is the cookie cutter minitruck. It's almost hard to stand out because so many people have them.
I now have my wife's Mazda that I've put a Ford 5.0L in. I don't know enough to do a FI swap, but the carb setup was easy. Especially since the truck was carbed to begin with. There is not as much info on the V8 swaps into Mazda as there is for S10's. There are also no aftermarket parts made for the swap. You will have to know how to fabricate things and it takes some creativity. There is tips and tricks on this forum and MazdaTrucking, but there is still a lot of "figure it out on your own" stuff.
Both trucks are great. Each truck had it's pros and cons to working on things. Some were easier than the other. It's ultimately up to you. I would buy both a Mazda or an S10 again. But I love that the Mazda is more rare at car/truck shows.
