First point of order on your first vehicle is to read up. Take everything you read with a grain of salt. If you have questions about a topic, PM the biggest ass in the thread about it, then PM the guy that seems to think he has all the facts. Then research the points those two guys bring up, and you'll figure out the correct answer.
Secondly learn to drive. I know it seems ridiculous, but being a better capable driver than the other people on the road will keep you out of trouble. As with anything else in life, the more you know, the more you'll pay attention. We've all done some pretty stupid stuff on here, the reason we're all alive after our dumb acts is either pure luck or actual ability. Pick the right team.
Third, learn basic auto body skills. Most of it isn't rocket science. You'll end up with a better looking vehicle, and more pride in it over the long haul. Fix the rust, get some new headlights, make sure things work. You'll pick up mechanical skills just having an older vehicle, unlike everyone else that just has to put gas in their car.
Fourth, and this is the most important. Have fun. Be safe but enjoy your new found freedom. Welcome to the idiocracy that is being a minitruck owner.
