house of colors is over rated, i mean sure they have great products but it is way over priced. if you were to go ppg you would probably save close to 250 on that, which would be enough for a descent devilbus gravity fed gun. and like i said before spraying a car is really easy. i did that cadillac in 3 days, from origonal paint to new paint

We have a compressor but a small tank. and we have two paint guns and one is brand new. i just dont know how hard it would be and how do you get rid of orange peel? what style paint would i use?

oh you get orange peel no matter what when painting, you can turn up the pressure to atomize the paint a little more but i wouldnt worry about it. to get rid of orange peel is just a simple cut and buff. start with 1000 and sand the shit out of it, then sand with 1500 and then 2000. once the surface is smooth and free of orange peel and dirt nibs you buff it out till its like a mirror, you can burn the paint though so be generous with the rubbing compound

i primered mine myself with the help of a friend who also owns his own bodyshop. he helped me a little and he got me a gal. of primer for a whole 60 bucks for everything. he put the first coat on the bed and then i did everything else. it takes a little practice but depending on what kind of paint job you want it is fairly easy. just to let you know, i have painted the nose of an airline jet after we repaired it and it had metallic stripes down the side. when you paint metallics you want to move about twice as fast as painting with regular paint because if you don't the metallics will stack up causing the paint to run. remember that it is at least 95% prep work. focus on the prep, don't worry about painting. painting is easy. orange peel can be avoided simply by cleaning the vehicle thoroughly and makeing sure all you materials don't get contaminated with dirt and stuff. anyways if you need any advice just ask. like maztang,I primered my truck myself. I only had a small compressor and a borrowed spray gun,and I had to spray outdoors of all places. All in all,the primer job turned out good with no runs or anything. I used to do some paintwork at a custom shop I used to work at,so I have some experience with mixing paints and using spray guns and stuff.

I just bought one of those temporary shelter big ass vinyl garages to store my truck in for the winter,so I'm thinking in the spring I might be able to mock it up as a spray booth and paint my truck in it. As much as I wouldn't mind takinf my truck to have a professional paint job done,I like the DIY aspect and being able to say "yeah,I did all the apint and bodywork myself."

Oh,also something nobody has touched on for orange peel is that you may not be using enough reducer in the paint. That's generally the problem I found that I had when I was mixing paints for the first time. And also for spraying metallics, move fast and apply light coats. Like previously mentioned,if you go to slow, the metal flake piles up and runs like water.

tru & ppg is just as good, i have a bud that works at a place that sells the ppg so i could probably get a steal on it....i dont' have much exp doing body work or paint except on model cars & airplanes....helped prep a car once for paint....like someone else says i would rather be able to do it myself & gain the knowledge & exp...but i would feel more comfortable having someone that really knew what they were doing helping me if i did it myself....but time is also a big factor....i have very little to spare....otherwise the truck would be running by now......i'm still a ways away from laying any paint or primer for that matter.....

well its a real easy process, you could paint a b in about 2 days flat. the only shitty part is the cut and buff at the end, that can take quite a while if you have never done it

yea i work at a garage and im always paintin fenders and bumpers and rockers but i ve only sprayed one entire car it turned out sweet concidering we dont have a booth. its way les complicated than it seems...if your gonna by paint DO NOT do it through the mail find a knolageable local paint dealer he should be able to amswe any questions thats how i learned evey time i would go down there to pick up suplies id pick his brain while i was there and also if you go to your closest public libray im shure they have at least 10 books on auto body repair...WATCH OUT FOR CLEARCOAT HARDENER that stuff is crazy deadly..tips...if your going to bare metal it goes
1primersealer
2bondo/highbuildprimer
3base
4clear.

differnt color over stock paint
primer sealer( if you skip this original paint caqn bleed through)
base
clear

lay 2-3 coats of base back to back (let it get tacky(flash) inbetween) let it cure12-24h...wet sand it.and repeat like 2-3 more times...same with the clear..i helped my boss do his 95 vette the otherday we endedup putting 12 coats of base and 5 coats of clear on it ( wetsanding inbetween coats) and that thing looks wet when its a hundred degrees outside its so sexy...also use a garden hose and dampen the walls celing floor and sounding areas when your painting it will cut down on the dust dramaticly..with the orange peel i find that if i go to a 1.5 tip for clear instead of a 1.2 for paint..and use the correct tempature hardener i have verry little flaws afterwards. so find a paint guy, read a book or two, practice an a mailbox, lawnwower, or whatever, and learn a lesson that will not only save ya money but make ya money and lots of buddies too
