you can get a bottle @ tractor supply for less than a bill, then get it filled @
your local welding supply company, check with the welding suppy company though, you might be able to get the bottle cheaper there......

i had a lincoln from lowes, i built my whole truck with it. i never had gas on it though, i used flux core. it worked fine but you have to go slower. id say if your gonna do alot of welding get somethin bigger, if not, then a small lincoln should be fine. also you should consider the duty cycle of the welder. i think my lincoln was like 3 or 400 bucks.

I have a hobart 140. I just put a tank on it and it works perfectly. I think I paid 450 for the welder and I got the tanked filled for $125 from my local gas supply company.

millermatic 130 w/100% argon, everything ran between 750-800bucks, welds up to 1/4 in 110v. i agree with luv2spark buy the first time and be done with it. i dont do anything heavier so i dont need anything stronger, but i want a miller 210 next..... getya jumper cables and acouple batterys and some clothes hangers.....

a 70/30 gas works great to, or if you plan on doing stainless as well they have some really killer tri mix gases on the market.
