I've put alot of weight in the box but i havn't towed anything. My truck used to haul big blocks for an engine builder in a former life and once had a hitch and i'm wondering what it can tow stock and if a bigger carb/exhaust would up that.

mazdas arnt realy well suited for dragging a trailer, better suited for draggin frame...ask at a u haul shop they will tell you max. capacities. and the pacecetter im not shure u might lose some low end toruqe with that ..

250 pounds tongue weight,1000 pounds trailer weight is what the bumper is rated for.As old as our trucks are not sure I would want to be towing much more than that behind mine.Lol.BJ

with my 86 b2000 bumper hitch, I have towed a trailer prolly weighing more on the 1500lbs mark with my bed full maybe about 600lbs. We moved up a large hill away from the city. it did good on flat ground but was in second the whole way up the hill. The other thing is, if you dont know how to tow and judge when you should start slowing down, you shouldnt try towing that much. I started stopping like 4x's as much before I had to then if it was empty. If someone would have cut me off, I would have hit them, it was the only thing we had to tow with though, so we did with what we had. I also only had about an inch of travel avaliable in the back when it was loaded.

I should add to that my leafspring are almost in a straight line now. people think my truck is lowered, its not, it is just years of abuse, the past owner towed a boat with it. my clutch is also pretty burned up after that, we threw some logs into a trailer and towed it home, went to back it up the driveway (angled driveway) and my clutch started to slip, we only got it up the driveway half way, unloaded the logs and backed it up the rest of the way.

I have also towed many cars and other trucks with this truck, mostly on a tow dolly.

as far as power, it was ok, not as much as my old 318ci powerwagon 4x4, but its also a small truck.

now, I did have an 89 mazda b2600i 4x4 that towed like my powerwagon, plenty of power and everything. I now have an 87 b2600 carbed, hopefully when I get it running it will get a custom hitch on it.

some people may argue with the fact that I could have towed that much with a little mazda, but I did and it held up, what are you trying to tow?

I was debating a small boat or seadoo. I've had a 13b and tranny in the box and didn't notice it, my suspension is high in the back and like I said it was used for hauling v8's for 14 years by an engine builder.
I was debating putting a 2600 motor in it if possible as they have more torque but on a boat ramp the 4x4 would probably be a benifit.
If I was towing anything I would have a class 2 hitch on it. I do have a good clutch as it was changed 3 months ago and the original lasted 185000km! I would like to be able to tow my 323 as well but that's ~ 2300lb and the most weight I would ask of it.
Do carb upgrades make enough of a difference you'd notice it tow better? I'm really more of a tuner (and therefore know more about FI) but the truck is an awesome parts shuttle I didn't want to get a newer B cause I don't like the long "truck like" shifter and how high and "truck looking" they are.

btw how big of boat did the previous owner tow? My dad used to have a 20' mini cigar that his 4l awd aerostar towed better than most 1/2 tons do!

you should be fine towing a small boat or seadoo, even the 323 would be ok to tow, but make sure you use a dolly, cuts down on some of the weight on the hitch, if you do use a full trailer, I would suggest using one with brakes on the trailer itself.

I believe the past owner said something like a 20' or something around that, didnt get to see the boat. Make sure before you do major towing to check the brakes, make sure they are good.

also if you find an aftermarket hitch that fits our style mazda, please post it up so I can get one too, I would much rather have an actual hitch then the bumper one.

as far as upgrading the carb, I honestly dont know on the power when towing, it might.

something else, if you arent putting bags on your truck, you can run overload bags on the rear axle to keep the front front lifting higher then the rear with the added weight.

something else, if you dont want to sell your 2wd to get a 4wd, you can put a wider rear tire to help with traction and stability when towing, kind of the same idea of a dually but not as wide, would also give you better grip when pulling up the boat ramp.

if you are more into the tuner scene, are there any RWD mazdas other then the trucks and RX-7's. I have been thinking of getting a car, but I like RWD better. I know there are AWD protege's but I dont know how reliable they are.

hope this helps, if you have any more questions just ask

With my bagged mazda thats in my tag, i've towed a good amount with it. Biggest is probally a 18" car hauler with a ex-cab s10 on it. It pulled it with no porblem, the problem is the mazda trucks are sooooo light weight, it did push that truck with the wheels locked up through a red light. Accell ignition, headers, and weber and a narrowed rear end. Just got to take it slow if its big.

AWD proteges have a very weak drivetrain get a bf (87-89 chasis) 323 gtx 1.6 turbo (132hp) awd hatch there are also older glc's or 626's that are rwd but not many others. In canada you can import japaneese vehicles that are 15yrs old or older and a bg (90-94) 323 gtx or gtr would rock, they are 180 whp and 210 whp respectivly both awd and both group n cars based on the bp engine. I have the "180"hp engine in my fwd 323 it is much faster than say an srt10. If you go with a 323 of any year check out I'm a member there and it's a great resource for 323/glc info.

the hitch you can get is a reese class 2 it's for many vehicles (3500lb rating) at walmart

Just wanted to take this opportunity to brag about what I've hauled with my truck

*) 1 cut up B2600 4x4: front suspension and frame, rear axle, trans, transfer case, fenders, tires, wheels, etc.

*) 2500 lbs worth of landscaping bricks!
